⟨검정 우산을 쓴 여인의 초상⟩2019은 무엇을 경험한 신체에 대한 비디오 초상화이다. 1965년 인도네시아에서 발발한대학살에서 고초를 당하고 살아남은 스리 무하야티(Sri Muhayati)라는 한 여성을 응시하는 이 영상의 초점은 노구의 눈과 피부, 의복에 맞춰지고, 그 움직임에 따라 부유한다. 줄곧 무언가를 증언하고 있으나 특정한 부분을 제외하고 소리가 없다. 증언자의 생생한 사연을 직접적으로 드러내기 보다 한 사람의 신체에 집중한 이 작업은 궁극적으로 과거의 어떤 일을 듣고 아는 것이 아닌, 관람자로 하여금 전혀 모르는 타인의 신체를 온전히 겪고 이에 감응하는 경험을 가능케 한다.

A Portrait of a Woman with a Black Umbrella 2019 is a video portrait of a body that has experienced something. This video stares at a woman named Sri Muhayati who survived the Indonesian Massacre occurred in 1965, and the image is focused on her old eyes, skin and her clothes by which it moves along. Although she continuously gives testimony to something, it is soundless except for a particular part. By focusing on one person’s body rather than exposing the narrator’s vivid story, this work enables us to respond to fully experiencing a complete stranger’s body, not simply listen to a story of the past.
